Olympic beach volleyball player Alix Klineman has top sun protection advice


Here, Klineman shares more about how she stays focused as she trains for the biggest sporting event, from diligent skincare to listening to Drake before kicking the ball.

1. There is no question when it comes to sunscreen

I have a lot of different sunscreens for all of these different situations. Eir is sturdy and it’s almost like drawing it on it. I’m a big sweater, so it’s the only one I’ve found that will actually stay. Next I have a Shiseido transparent, which I really like because it’s super easy to apply and is perfect if you don’t wear makeup. Then there is Tizo who I really like. If I’m not playing volleyball, I like to make it my staple and then put my makeup on it. It’s tinted and it’s SPF 40. These are sort of my three go-tos [for the face].

Then, for my body, my favorite is Sun Bum because it contains a lot of zinc. It’s really white, but it’s generally the whiter the sunscreen the better it protects you, that’s what I’ve learned. It’s a spray that’s really handy for your body when you’re trying to, you know, apply a lot of surface.

2. Removing sunscreen is just as important as putting it on.

My Holy Grail shower gel is from Marie Véronique. It’s another brand that I really like. It was founded by this former chemist, so she knows a lot about how your skin works, the microbiome, your skin barrier and all that. She actually wrote a book called Acne response and I have dealt with hormonal acne, on and off throughout my adult life. It’s an oil based cleanser, which I really like, and I have used oil based cleansers or even lotions up to this mark. It’s a very gentle formula but at the same time it takes everything off your face. I feel like it’s more nourishing and hydrating because of the oil. And I feel like we’ve always been taught, “Oh, use oil-free if you have oily skin,” but there’s a lot of scientific evidence that supports you actually wanting to put oils on your skin and this helps regulate the amount of oil your body and skin produce.

3. Make time for non-professional activities

I’m someone who can’t really live and breathe volleyball. I need other things in my life to make me happy. I also feel like it’s a good save because there are days when volleyball isn’t as fun or I don’t play well or something bothers me about volleyball. When I have other things that bring me joy on the side, it really adds to my overall happiness and balance in my life. I love to cook, so I always make it a point to cook a really elaborate dinner with my boyfriend, friends or family. I love photography and I love going to the beach. No matter how busy I am or how much I want to win gold in Tokyo, I know I’m actually my best and happiest myself if I take time for those things outside as well. ground.

4. Hydration is key … with a little something extra

When I played indoor volleyball I never had to worry about [hydration] because you are always in those air conditioned gyms. When I first stepped down to the beach, my first hot tournament was in Fort Lauderdale and I didn’t really care about drinking the water. I drank a normal amount of water but we had a busy day with training and the press. The next day we started the tournament and I have never felt so bad on the court. I hardly felt like I could move on to the next point. I felt like my body was closing in on me and I couldn’t understand it. Then I was chatting with my partner and my trainer who are both very experienced and they asked me, “Did you drink a lot of water yesterday? It was the first lesson I learned and I learned it the hard way.

Now I drink so much water, especially when I get to a tournament. A big part of that too is having electrolytes. You can drink a lot of water and after a certain point your body won’t absorb it anymore, so the electrolytes actually help you retain water. Often times I wake up in the morning and pour electrolytes into a glass of water and swallow that first thing. I try to carry a Hydroflask with me all day to remind myself to keep drinking water. When we went to Cancun this spring, we had three tournaments there. It was so hot and I was so afraid of being dehydrated. I drank more water than I had ever had in my life and had no blemishes. I felt like I had just rinsed my body with water.

There is this electrolyte called Hydrant and I love it because they only use natural flavors and real sugar and electrolytes. I don’t like anything with artificial flavors for me, not even artificial sweeteners. If I can taste Stevia, I can’t. I’ll add the lime flavored Hydrant and sometimes I’ll even add a bundle of collagen, so I get 10 grams of protein, electrolytes, and a little water.

5. Visualize success

We always take five minutes to visualize before going to the field. We usually go there, we set up all our equipment and we take our groups out to warm up. But before we do anything we know we close our eyes [and visualize]. I put on some music, set a timer for five minutes, and try to visualize myself playing well, having confidence in myself, and doing all the things I know how to do so that I’m actually on it. ground. I feel like I saw myself doing it, so it gives me a little boost in confidence.

I really like a lot of old Drake stuff like Take Care and I love listening to this album before the game. I feel like he’s got a lot of loot and that puts me in the zone.
